What is a Chemical Peel?
Chemical peels are a noninvasive skin procedure popular for treating severe acne and pigmentation. They gently exfoliate the top layer of skin with a solution comprised of different acids. How do chemical peels work?
Your skin naturally has a pH of around 5.5. Applying an acidic solution reduces the pH level of your skin, which in turn loosens the top layer of skin (epidermis), resulting in a shedding or “peeling” of the top layer. What types of acids are used in a chemical peel?
The acids used depend on the type of chemical peel best suited for your skin concerns. Superficial chemical peels, which only remove the epidermis, may include glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid, mandelic acid, phytic acid, or retinoic acid. Medium-depth peels, which exfoliate the top dermal layers, and deep chemical peels, used for severe skin issues, may involve more heavy-duty solutions.
